Open almost any publication and you’re most likely to see a product endorsed by a major athlete. Once, athletes affixed their names to items closely related to their particular sport – hockey players promoted sticks and protective gear; tennis players gave their thumbs-up to certain tennis rackets; or golfers used the best clubs signed by them. As time went on, perhaps owing to a limited number of endorsable sports items, athletes began appearing as promoters of virtually any product conceivable – cars, clothing, toiletries, cooking utensils, vacation packages, etc.

Such is the world of advertising. A celebrity name will greatly bolster the sales of a product, often regardless of its intrinsic quality (or lack thereof). But, once the celebrity stardust settles, there remain some products that require no celebrity endorsements. Their quality and value are their own major selling points. Sometimes, some companies might go so far, as to create a whole subdomain for their clients, like Hershey Hotel.

Athletic Support Socks by Jobst, Juzo, Sigvaris, and Mediven are worn by more athletes, professional and amateur, than most other brands. Athletic Support Socks provide a Sport Compression advantage, and help improve their performance and endurance.

Graduated compression is the secret behind these outstanding Athletic Socks. Greater pressure on the veins (more near the ankles and gradual lesser amounts rising towards the knees) helps improve circulation, putting greater amounts of energy-boosting oxygen into your system at a faster rate. Support Socks help reduce muscle vibration and improve muscle endurance and strength. Muscle containment can reduce soft tissue damage in contact sports, as well as aid in recovery.

Athletic Support Socks are made with Cool-Max, a special fiber that actually pulls moisture away from your feet to the outside of the sock, keeping your feet dry and bacteria-free. And, the added thickness of the sock makes each step extra comfortable.

Whether you engage in serious athletic competition, or just enjoy a hearty daily walk, try wearing Athletic Support Socks. You’ll feel the difference in every step, and you’ll be certain to give your endorsement after you experience the Sports Compression difference.

The “V” sign, most commonly made by raising the index and middle finger of one’s hand, is most commonly known as a victory sign. The origins of this sign date back to the 14th century. Throughout the years, the “v” has re-emerged in various forms, always with some meaning other than merely the 22nd letter of the English alphabet.

During World War II, British Prime Minister made the sign famous in his “V for Victory” campaign. The 1960’s hippie movement adopted the “V” as a peace sign, commonly displayed at anti-Vietnam demonstrations. To this day, the “V” sign still appears in many pictures around the world, highlighting various peace movements.

But, “V” also has other connotations. It is also the sign for Varicose Veins. Many women suffer from varicose veins during their pregnancy. Varicose veins are unsightly, uncomfortable, but, more often than not, occur during those special nine months.

As the uterus grows, it puts pressure on the large vein on the right side of the body. This, in turn, puts pressure on the veins in the legs. These veins are already under pressure. But, during pregnancy, raise progesterone levels cause the blood vessels to relax. And, blood supply increases as a result of the pregnancy. When all these conditions are combined – extra pressure, increased blood volume, and relaxed blood vessels – the blood vessels swell and those closest to the skin begin to make an appearance. These are the varicose veins that are noticeable. They appear blue or purple, are slightly swollen, and may also itch or burn slightly.

In many instances, varicose veins will disappear after giving birth. However, during the months of pregnancy, many doctors recommend wearing Maternity stockings by Jobst, Juzo, Sigvaris or Mediven.

Maternity Support Hose are specially designed Compression Stockings designed for women during the months of pregnancy. They apply gentle yet continual pressure on the veins to help reduce swelling. And, the special tummy panel grows with you as well as offering lower back support.

Speak to your physician about the benefits of wearing Maternity Support Hose. They’ll make you feel victorious.

Products come; products go. It seems that, wherever you turn, there is something that is “new and improved”, “bigger and better”, “newly formulated”, “our best yet”, or some other superlative to describe a product that, seemingly, is the greatest item since the first wheel went rolling away out of control.

Logic, though, tells us quite clearly that not everything can be the “greatest.’ Moreover, many outstanding products are sold daily and do not have huge banners above them, nor do marching bands playing songs of John Philip Sousa appear each time a sale is transacted.

The truth is that the best way to judge a product is not by its advertising but, rather, at the hands of those who use it. As they say, a good advertiser can sell ice to Eskimos. But, a great product will sell itself.

Compression Stockings by Sigvaris, Mediven, Jobst and Juzo are, by far, the leading compression stockings available for all your therapeutic needs. It comes as no surprise that physicians worldwide recommend these brands more often than all other brands combined.

What makes these so special? The difference is the quality engineering and superior manufacturing that goes into each and every pair of Compression Stockings and Socks. Graduated Compression is the key to superiority.

In order for blood to flow properly through the veins on its return to the heart, it requires pressure in order to counter the downward pull of gravity. The muscles in the legs squeeze the veins, forcing the blood to move upwards. When the natural pressure in the legs is inadequate, Compression Stockings help complete the process. Each pair is carefully measured to apply the exact needed amount of pressure precisely where it is required. Greater amounts of pressure are applied at the lowest points of the legs, and gradual lesser amounts approaching the knees.

Compression Stockings are available in a range of pressure levels. Your physician can prescribe the ideal pressure level for your specific health condition.

If you suffer from circulatory problems in your legs, therapy is close at hand with Compression Stockings by Sigvaris, Mediven, Jobst and Juzo. Try them and you’ll be convinced, but don’t just read the advertising. You be the judge for yourself!

In baseball, the pitch is the action of throwing the ball by the pitcher to the batter.

Pitch is also a tar related substance, often used in paving or for insulation purposes.

In the world of aviation, pitch is the term used to describe the distance between rows of seats on an aircraft. The greater the pitch, the more comfortable you will be, especially in economy class. In a review of the major commercial airlines in the world, the pitch in economy class ranged from 29″ to 34″. In airlines still using row seating in business class, the average pitch was 54″.

On a short flight, you might not be affected by sitting in economy class. But, what happens when you are confined to a tight economy class seat for a lengthy flight?

If you are like many long haul flyers who remove their shoes in order to be more comfortable, you may notice that your feet are somewhat swollen by the end of the flight. Your legs may also be swollen or sore. You may notice red blotches or perhaps feel “warm spots” on your legs. All these are signs of possible DVT development.

DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis), also known as Economy Class Syndrome, is a condition that can develop due to prolonged activity, specifically in an aircraft. The blood moving through the veins in your legs requires pressure supplied by movement of the legs’ muscles in order to assist the blood flow. When your legs are inactive, the muscles do not move and the blood begins to settle in the lowest extremities, rather than move upwards to the heart. Stagnating blood can form a blood clot (thrombus). If this blood clot should break free of the blood vessel, it can travel to your heart, lungs, or brain, with possible serious, even fatal, complications.

Wearing Travel Socks is an excellent preventive measure against DVT development. Travel Socks are special low-pressure Compression Socks that apply continual vital pressure to your legs. This pressure forces the blood to continue moving and, as such, prevents the stagnation of your blood. Your legs will feel refreshed and healthier at the end of your flight – no swelling, no aches, and, best of all, no DVT.

Travel Socks are available in a variety of colors and a range of sizes. Don’t board your next flight without a pair!

A recently published article in the journal Cell Metabolism reports an important breakthrough in the search for a cure for Type 1 (Juvenile) Diabetes.

Researchers at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Hadassah University Medical Center published results of a multi-year project sponsored and supported by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

The study discovered that as the glucose level is increased in the blood, it tells the beta cells to regenerate. It’s not blood glucose that is the signal, as commonly believed, but the glucose-sensing capacity of the beta cell that’s the key for regeneration. This was the first time that this sensing of a high level of glucose has been shown to be the “trigger” that induces beta cell regeneration.

In persons suffering from type 1 (juvenile) diabetes, the body’s immune system launches a counter-productive attack on the insulin-producing beta cells, resulting in the cells’ decline of insulin production and eventual cessation of production.

Without insulin, the body’s cells are unable to absorb glucose from the blood and process it for energy. As a result, glucose levels rise in the blood, leaving the body’s vital systems starved for vital energy. That’s why people with the disease must inject insulin daily.

In addition, the researchers discovered that glucokinase, a glucose-sensing enzyme in the cells, is the key molecule that triggers the beta cell regeneration.

Because this study showed that regeneration of beta cells depends on glucokinase levels, this discovery may open the avenues for development of a new kind of drug to modulate glucokinase or other methods to direct beta cells accurately for regeneration and replication.

Finally, should the researchers discover a method to prevent the immune system from attacking beta cells at the onset, the combined treatment could help pave the way towards a full cure for type 1 diabetes.

Until such time as a cure is discovered, diabetics must take extra care of their bodies. Foot care, for example, is extremely important, as diabetes can destroy blood vessels in the feet, eliminating pain sensors and the ability of the blood system to transfer antibiotics for treatment of infections.

Diabetic Socks by Jobst and Juzo are highly recommended for daily wear by diabetics. These special socks are extra comfortable and non-constricting, allowing for maximum blood flow. The special absorbent fibers help wick away perspiration, and the seamless design prevents perspiration from pooling in folds and seams, creating possible sources of infection causing bacteria. The thicker material makes walking pleasant and helps prevent blisters and chafing.

Take good care of yourself, see your doctor regularly, and wear Diabetic Socks for that extra level of protection.

Summer has, once again, gone into hibernation for another year, taking with it memories of vacations, family barbecues, beach outings, sun and fun. In its place, autumn has arrived as a prelude to winter.

Autumn has its own charm and character, considered by some to be the most beautiful of all seasons of the year. In many places, autumn heralds a breathtaking display of nature’s own panorama of colors. As temperatures begin to chill, we begin preparations for the onset of winter, preparing our homes and gardens for the soon-to-arrive changes in temperatures and climate.

Many people, though, neglect to prepare themselves for the winter. Believe it or not, seasonal changes can cause reactions to the human body, which we often tend to ignore. These may include various skin blemishes, muscle spasms, reactions to light, cold, and dampness, etc. It is best to not ignore physical symptoms, even though they may seem minor. Sometimes small indicators may be signs of larger problems.

For example, leg swelling and aches or pains in the calves and thighs may be indications of circulatory problems. If the blood does not flow properly, or is interrupted for a variety of reasons, it may pool in certain spots, leading to these symptoms. Left untreated, minor circulatory problems can lead to far more serious complications, including blood clots.

Compression Stockings by Sigvaris, Mediven, Jobst and Juzo provide excellent therapeutic care for circulatory problems. They are medically engineered to provide the exact amounts of pressure that the legs require in order to maintain a regular flow of blood.

Compression Stockings are manufactured in a range of pressure levels, as well as a variety of styles. Depending on your specific medical condition, your physician can prescribe the correct pressure level for your needs, as well as instruct you in the proper use of Compression Stockings. Do not wear Compression Stockings without first consulting your physician or primary health care professional.

Enjoy the autumn season and enjoy good health!

Exactly how accurate is science?

According to space officials at NASA, a dead satellite is due to enter the Earth’s orbit and crash somewhere, on September 23, give or take a day or so.

Scientists have been monitoring this satellite for several months and originally expected it to hit the Earth around October 1. However, based on its current trajectory and velocity, the experts at NASA subsequently moved up their prediction by one week.

The dead satellite is expected to break into 26 pieces as it enters our atmosphere. The largest of the falling pieces will weigh approximately 350 lbs. NASA is yet to announce where the satellite will fall, nor how large the other pieces will be. However, NASA does point out that the chances of a piece of satellite falling in a specific location are only 1 in 3,200. They also have emphasized that, to the best of their knowledge, no person has ever been hit by junk falling from space.

As the satellite comes closer to Earth, NASA will make public announcements regarding possible crash sites. They have stated, though, while the satellite remnants may fall on any continent of the globe, there is no possibility of any of the space debris falling in Antarctica.

If medical science performed with this degree of accuracy, we would be in serious trouble. Thankfully, there are some sciences that we can count on continually.

Compression Stockings and Socks by Jobst, Juzo, Mediven and Sigvaris are manufactured and engineered to exacting medical standards. These Compression Stockings and Socks offer therapeutic relief for a variety of conditions caused by insufficient blood circulation in the veins of the legs.

While some problems may begin innocently enough with swelling and slight aches, these symptoms may be the start of more serious conditions such as blockages, ulcers or blood clots.

Compression Hosiery provides the precise calculated amount of pressure required in exactly the right spots on the legs. The continual pressure induces blood circulation and helps keep the blood flowing properly, thus reducing and relieving the circulatory problems.

Please consult your physician before wearing Compression Stockings.

Sadly, diabetes is on the rise in the United States. Current estimates indicate that roughly 30 million Americans suffer from diabetes. Even more frightening than the growing numbers is the distressing fact that many of these diabetes sufferers ignore the disease.

Make no mistake – diabetes can kill! The problem is that it slowly destroys from within and that causes many people to ignore their health.

Many physicians warn their patients about the perils of an unhealthy lifestyle. Yet, because there doesn’t seem to be any immediate damage, the warnings go unheeded.

Reduce or eliminate the intake of refined sugar, they are warned. However, one or two bites don’t seem to cause any problems, so let me finish the piece of cake. In fact, I feel fine so I can probably indulge in a second piece, just this once. I’ll be careful tomorrow.

What a poor decision! The effects of the sugar intake are certainly not immediate. Yet, the body’s inability to properly break down the sugar will have an effect.

Often, one of the first areas to be affected is the feet. The blood vessels and accompanying nerves are destroyed. The damaged nerves eliminate feeling, while the deteriorated blood vessels interrupt or prevent proper blood flow. The inherent danger is the distinct possibility of an infection developing. A wound on the foot, even a small wound, may go undetected as the pain sensors – the body’s early warning system – are not responding due to the damaged nerves. Many infections are treated through the use of antibiotics. However, in this instance, the antibiotics prove to be ineffective. The damaged blood vessels are unable to transfer the antibiotics throughout the body.

Foot care is a high priority for many diabetics. It is vitally important to preserve as much blood circulation as possible as well as prevent any possibility of developing foot infections.

Diabetic Socks by Jobst and Juzo are an important part of diabetic foot care. These special socks are seamless and made from special fibers that help keep the feet dry. The lack of seams does not provide areas for infection-causing bacteria to pool and fester. The tops of the socks are non-binding to enable maximum circulation. And, the extra thickness helps prevent blisters.

If you have been diagnosed with diabetes, don’t make the mistake of trying to outguess and calculate what you can get away with. Take good care of yourself and wear Diabetic Socks to help protect your sensitive feet.

One of America’s favorite pastimes is a visit to the weekend Yard or Garage Sales. These are often great opportunities to find fantastic values on items that you may need for your home. If someone else has been doing their spring cleaning in the attic, basement or garage, why not take advantage? Their discards may be exactly what you were looking for, and couldn’t find anywhere else.

The Neighborhood Nostalgia Network recommends these weekend sales as the number one venue for locating old collectibles that are hard to find. Many people are attracted to items from yesteryear but are often wary of “authentic antiques” sold in stores. Chances are quite good, though, that most of the “Grandma-era Goodies” at these home sales are, indeed, truly what they appear to be.

The Network compiled a list of some of the top “Grandma” items that people seek and frequently find, whether for use or display. The list included:

Quilts – They just don’t make quilts like this anymore. Hand-stitched quilts are comfortable and warm, and evoke memories of cuddling with Grandma on a winter’s night.

Rocking Chair – Rocking chairs are still widely produced but the old ones have that “lived-in” feel about them. One can see the craftsmanship that went into handmade rocking chairs.

Ceramic Pie Dishes – Nobody made pies like Grandma! She used her secret recipe and, without a doubt, part of the magical flavor had to be the pie dish. Today’s glass and aluminum pans just don’t compare.

There is simply no comparison. If Grandma used it then, we should still use it today.

On the other hand (with apologies to Grandma), Grandma also wore heavy elastic stockings to help her sore, tired legs. No offense meant but they were rather unsightly to look at. Even Grandma would complain that they made her legs feel better but they were a tad uncomfortable to put on and wear.

Modern technology honors Grandma’s wisdom and combines it with a modern product.

Compression Stockings by Jobst, Juzo, Sigvaris and Mediven are the 21st century answer to sore, tried legs. Employing the latest technology and engineered to the highest standards of the medical community, these Compression Stockings offer therapeutic relief with the added benefits of style and scientifically calculated pressure levels.

Various medical conditions require different degrees of pressure. Compression Stockings offer the exact amount of pressure in the precise points on your leg. Your physician can best recommend the correct pressure level for your specific needs.

May your Weekend Searches be productive and rewarding. And, if you need some extra support in your legs, ask your doctor about Compression Stockings by Jobst, Juzo, Sigvaris and Mediven. Even Grandma will approve.

It’s just human nature but many of us, when we’re merely wandering, are attracted by trails. There you are, strolling through a park, when you discover a path that leads off to somewhere unknown. As if there were some type of magnetic pull, you find yourself following the trail, curious to see where it leads.

At some point or other, most of us have fallen victim to this lure of the unknown. An unmarked path could lead to adventure. Or, perhaps there is some amazing site to be found at the end.

Hikers are known for this attraction. You begin following a specific trail when, lo and behold the path branches off in several directions. You pick one at random and this, too, reaches a point where several others begin. This vast array of paths is part of the fun and excitement of hiking.

But, then, there are times when the “vast array” is not fun at all. Varicose veins have been known as the “road map” of legs. They are unsightly, annoying and unpleasant.

Varicose veins are quite common during pregnancies. As the uterus begins growing, it places pressure on the inferior vena cava – the large vein on the right side of the body. This, in turn, puts pressure on the veins in the leg.

By itself, the body might be able to cope with the extra pressure. But, there are additional factors involved. Normally, the veins in the legs are under a certain degree of pressure in order to enable the blood to flow upwards against gravity. Pregnancy causes an increase in blood volume, putting greater strain on the veins. As well, pregnancy causes the body’s progesterone levels to rise. As these levels rise, they cause the walls of the blood vessels to relax.

The combination of these conditions results in veins that become distended. These are the varicose veins that become visible. Although the condition generally diminishes or disappears soon after giving birth, it is, nonetheless, quite unpleasant during the pregnancy. The affected areas of the legs may be sore or itchy. The skin may feel hot to the touch. There may be swelling by day’s end.

Maternity Support Hosiery by Jobst and Juzo are an ideal method to relieve the discomfort of varicose veins as well as provide extra support that is most welcome during pregnancy. The special fibers provide gentle compression at vital spots along your leg. They are comfortable to wear and the special tummy panel grows with you during these special months.

Maternity Support Hose should only be worn under medical supervision. Speak to your doctor or obstetrician about the right support for you.
